The Film Grabber, new development from Bollegraaf Recycling Machinery

17 February 2009

Single-stream processing of recyclable materials is becoming increasingly common in the recycling industry worldwide. This means that all recyclable materials are put together in plastic bags and are sorted by a single sorting installation. The bags are opened by a bag opener, but the foil of these bags disrupts the subsequent sorting process. Therefore, the foil has to be removed at the beginning of the sorting process. Bollegraaf Recycling Machinery has found the perfect solution for this, namely the film grabber. This film grabber mechanically removes the foil from the flow of materials, as a result of which fewer workers will be required here.

Bollegraaf Recycling Machinery is a global supplier of sorting installations. This means it is well informed on what goes on in this market. The Research & Development department is therefore always looking for solutions for Bollegraaf customers. As a result, Bollegraaf is the first supplier who offers a solution for removing foil from a single stream.

Foil makes sorting recyclable materials more difficult because it wraps itself around the recyclable materials. As a result, it becomes difficult to sort the recyclables. The solution for removing foil is the unique film grabber.

The concept is well thought out and a patent has been applied for. The film grabber is a revolving drum with movable spikes. The flow of recyclable materials is led uniformly to the film grabber by a conveyor belt. Before the film grabber, a flow of air blows the foil slightly upwards. The spikes of the film grabber grab the foil from the material flow. On top of the drum, the spikes withdraw into the drum as a result of which the foil ends up lying free on the drum and can then be sucked up. The rest of the material flow drops under the film grabber onto another belt.

The film grabber mechanically removes more than 70 percent of the foil larger than A4 from the flow of materials. This ensures that the flow remains free of foil, without the need for extra labour.

This application has obviously been tested extensively and has already been sold worldwide to clients in, among others, The Netherlands, the United States, Canada and France. To them, it offers the ideal solution for the removal of the disruptive foil. Using the film grabber also saves on labour costs.
